after taking office president obama said he would fix the economy in three years or face a one-term proposition. today he has broken the promises. his words have no credibility. host: that was the republican weekly address. ralph from the main joins us on the independent line. caller: i was born in 1950, 61 years old. i have gone through all kinds of things. my dad was in the service -- i have had two fathers. i am taking care of my mother now who is just getting one cut back after another through social security. medical benefits. i am not happy. i know what is going on. in the last five years i have taking care of her 24-7. i have had time to educate myself on what it is. until we understand who the enemy is, nothing will change and their plans will continue. there are manufacturing a war because global international banks and their lackeys have bankrupted the world. derivatives are nothing more than leverage. you have a situation where if you look and research it, the city of london which is one square mile in the heart of london which is not even governed by the laws of eng

to the other guy. the democrats were in control for four years, two under bush and two under obama, yet it was all bush's fault and nobody takes responsibility. that's the problem. the voters need to take responsibility and get rid of every one of the incumbents, it's maybe not in this election, but if they don't get this country straightened out and get the economy straightened out, but just take one election in two years, if it's not better, get rid of every one of them and they will finally get the message. host: let's look at some national news stories. this story from the new york times -- and this other story in the times -- looking at other international news stories on long lines of what our last caller was talking about, whether international news is getting attention. and this in the washington post -- the debate tomorrow night will focus on domestic issues. what would you be listening for? if you're not going to watch, why? monty writes -- in new orleans on the republican line, eustice. caller: good morning. i don't know how anything can change. romney would have to come up w

the obama administration tried to do that the last four years and we have seen ideas from the ronny administration. romney administration. host: how large a role this manufacturing plant in the u.s.? -- does manufacturing play in the u.s.? guest: a lot of people feel like it is is dying industry in america, but take a look at the numbers. the u.s. still the world's largest manufacturer. manufacturing comprises 11.7% of gross domestic product. manufacturing comprises 9% of total u.s. employment. and it is directly employing 10.9 million workers in the u.s. host: we are going to get into the numbers and look at how things like 9% total employment have changed at the last couple of decades. mr. morath, let me ask about the kinds of manufacturing done. surely that has changed the last couple of decades. guest: we have a fairly robust automotive industry, but there are a number of different areas where things have changed and could change further, such as increasing energy production -- oil, gas, refining. host: this chart is from the bureau of labor statistics, a sister agency, but they

the congressman doesn't like the affordable care act and obama, it extends medicare for eight years. it's a safety net. it's important for our seniors. works for our seniors. we ought not become destroying it. quite frankly, you have not stepped forth with ideas on how to make medicare solvent for the future. >> representative rehberg, 30 minutes. >> you don't extend medicare by taking $716 billion out. he said benefits were not going to cut. that's not the issue, the issue is doctors and hospitals will not be fairly reimbursed for seeing seniors. if president obama and senator tester say you will not lose your insurance under the healthcare reform, no, the problem is nobody will be able to give you that insurance. the doctor may not be able to see you. we must put that back by repealing obamacare. if by putting the money back into medicare, we can make it stronger and last longer and begin serious discussions of a bottom-up solution. >> question from tom to senator tester. >> yes senator tester, you frequently referred to as the only working farmer in the u.s. senate. trade issues by montana far

: there is no question -- president obama had a jobs bill last year. the republicans had no use for it. it was put aside because they did not want to have the present have a success. they were not interested in creating jobs. do they have a jobs plan? there is no record that cutting tax creates jobs. i do think the democrats need to be bolder and put forward many more ideas about how to create jobs. in my mind the democratic party is a coalition of interest. the republican party i think will possibly expire because it has become so extremist. it risks extinction in a country going through such demographic shifts. it is primarily a white, older party to that. it doesn't understand how they will operate. they will throw as much money and do the vote suppression which about 11 courts have said we're not going to buy into the idea of bogus voter fraud to impair the greatest rights america has. host: we have 10 students on the bus. all the journalism students are double majors. a quick comment from you as an editor who hires journalists. guest: i think that is a great idea. many journalism schools are going

and the last four years of rock obama, but what they have had to deal with, in fairness, is 9/11, a couple of wars that require a lot of spending, the tax cuts of george bush -- i am not sure where you stood on those, but they did eat into the amount of money we had to spend -- and then the recession, which was some say close to a depression. did that time prevent us from being able to make deficits and debt a top priority? >> it should not have. it could have, but it should not have come out if people were thinking clearly, if they were well educated, if they even understood this whole damn thing, which they do not. if you say what percentage of the american people understand this, i would say it is a very low number. it to be everybody, and everybody should say this is my country. people should be very active about not letting anything damaged our country. the one thing we have not mentioned at all, there is no question at all in my mind, if we keep going this way, some nation is going to head over here to take us. if they did, they have picked the right time, right? i wish every america

the other months of the year? guest: it absolutely does because we are on a political threshold that president obama has been struggling to get over to the other side. when the headlines and every newspaper reads that we are no longer above 8% unemployment, the political implications are greater than what this means in terms of the economy. host: what are the industries that saw the biggest boost from this? guest: hospitality and warehousing added jobs. we did not see any huge jump up or down and other industries. host: when economists look at the numbers, are we seeing a trend or do we not know yet ? guest: economists generally say this has been a positive trend. the one reason september numbers have been used by economists is that usually when the work force, the size of the work force, increases, that justifies that people are out looking for work and it means that people may be have not given up. that has been the case in the previous month but in september, we saw about the labor market grew a lot of people entered the job market and thought they could find a job now, maybe
